The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest railroad in North America and was chartered in 1834, the LIRR carries an average of 282,400 passengers each weekday on 728 trains. In its history, the LIRR has served billions of customers taking them to and from work, home, school, sporting events, concerts and Broadway shows. To better serve its customers and the region into the 21st century, the LIRR has made many improvements including, diesel and dual mode locomotives, upgrades to diesel territory, stations and yards; the transformation of Penn Station; and replacement of the Reynold's Channel Bridge in Long Beach. Current projects include new M-7 electric train cars; the overhauling of existing cars; station upgrades and cyclical replacement of tracks, ties and switches to ensure a smooth ride. A few facts: The LIRR serves Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan; 92.2% of our trains were on time in 2005; we have 124 stations; 1,060 rail cars; 701 miles of track; 81 million people rode the LIRR in 2005 and we have more than 6,000 employees.
