Assistant Conductor
Transportation Department
Responsibilities:
In general, duties include assisting train crew in the safe and efficient movement of customers, performance of various freight and/or yard movement operations, mechanical troubleshooting/minor repairs of equipment, collecting transportation, making announcements, operating doors, handling emergency situations, coupling and uncoupling train cars, throwing switches, etc.
Minimum Requirements:
- Ability to demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills
- High School Diploma
- Prior customer service experience (including handling of cash transactions).
- College credits preferred.
Steps in the Selection Process:
- Candidates must attend an Open House that includes an overview of the duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Conductor position, a Vocabulary Test, a Mathematics test and a preliminary interview.
- Panel Interview: Based on the test results, the preliminary interview and a background investigation (including a credit check), candidates will be selected for panel interviews.
- Candidates who successfully complete the panel interview will be invited to participate in a one-day class covering LIRR operating rules, signals and definitions. A follow-up test on the material covered will be given.
- Training Program: Candidates who successfully complete the first three steps of the selection process may be selected to participate in the Assistant Conductor 2-Phase Training Program. The Training for Assistant Conductor is accomplished through two phases:
Phase 1 is 14 weeks long, 14 hours per week, consisting of 2 weekday or weeknight sessions, 3 1/2 hours per session and Saturdays a.m. to p.m. During Phase 1, a physical abilities test will be administered to ensure that candidates can perform the essential functions of the job. Phase 1 training will include three qualifying examinations. You must successfully pass these examinations to proceed to the next phase of training.
Phase 2 - Candidates who successfully pass Phase 1 training will be eligible to proceed into Phase 2 of the program, which is compensated. Phase 2 is approximately 3 weeks in duration and will be conducted as positions become available.
Written and Practical Qualifying Examinations:
- Operating Rules & Procedures for passenger and freight service.
- Ticket sales, collections and accounting procedures.
- Air Brake and equipment inspections and troubleshooting.
- CPR/First Aid Training.
Conductor qualification is mandatory and takes place approximately 2-5 years after initial Assistant Conductor qualification. Failure to qualify as a Conductor may result in termination from the Company.
