Apprentice Lineman
Engineering Department
Responsibilities:
- Climb poles up to 90 ft., with gaffs and belts, to install transformers and cross arms.
- Work in underground spaces to splice cables and disconnect switches.
- Lift and carry heavy components for installation.
- Study each month's materials and complete homework assignments (Monthly
Lessons). Exams will be given on each lesson and a passing grade must
be achieved. Failure of 3 lessons in the three-year training period is
grounds for dismissal. A final examination will be administered; if a
candidate fails the examination, there will be one opportunity for re-examination.
The Training Program is in two parts:
Part 1: Physical Characteristics (location of all high tension feeders, substations, etc.)
Part 2: Electrical theory and cable splicing training.
Minimum requirements:
- A high school diploma.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a Class 3 driver's license.
- Must pass an initial 10-day intensive program for pole climbing and demonstrate the ability to climb 70-foot poles.
- Demonstrate ability to give as well as receive and understand written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrate capability and willingness to climb poles up to 90 ft.
Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications
- Prior electrical training.
