Assistant Signalman
Engineering Department
Responsibilities:
- Required to do excavation work along the right-of-way for installation of signal cables, air lines, and foundations for signal equipment, trim trees, cut brush, and paint various signal and communications equipment.
- Assist qualified Mechanic in the assembly, installation and testing of signal and communications equipment. Must be skilled in the use of various hand tools.
- Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather and conditions, including confined spaces and heights.
- Climb poles (Communications employees).
- Must qualify as a Mechanic within a four-year period. Employees who fail to qualify within the four-year period are subject to termination of employment.
Minimum Requirements:
- Basic electrical background, either acquired through formal training and/or practical experience.
- Must pass a written electrical test, panel interview, and practical exam to proceed through the process.
- Candidates who pass the written test, panel interview, and practical exam must complete a computer-based training program on their own time (uncompensated). The computer-based training program will consist of electrical/electronic training. Candidates must complete this program in 48 classroom hours, within a six-week period.
- Employees entering the Communications Department must be able to pass a preliminary pole-climbing test.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- For promotion in the Communications Section, a CDL B driver’s license is necessary.
- High School diploma or GED.
