Engineer - Signal Design
Engineering Department
Responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate efforts of the Signal-Design group to ensure prompt production of quality design for use by vendors and LIRR field forces.
- Installation of safe, efficient, modern signaling which is a key factor to improved train operations, a major goal of the LIRR modernization program.
- Provide direction for Signal Design Consultants and vendors and develop and keep current standard design procedures and materials.
- Develop signaling concepts with other LIRR departments to ensure design product meets requirements and support Capital Programs in overall management of a total capital project.
- Participate in framing and implementing the improvements to railroad signaling technology and efficiency. Ensure efficient concepts are utilized in signaling projects and rolling stock compatible with the signal system and provide technical support for procurement of material and services.
- Provide support for prompt repair, revision of existing signal system including emergency conditions. Provide support for installation and cutover of new signal systems including field support.
- Select, develop and motivate personnel within the section. Create an environment that respects individual differences and enables employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.
- Direct, implement and control the adherence to safety rules and regulations. Promote safe work practices and provide safe working conditions for employees.
- All other assignments as requested by senior management.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Recent, progressively responsible directly related signal systems experience with extensive knowledge of Engineering principles as they apply to Signal Systems.
- Knowledge of signal fundamentals, including equipment, applications design concept and processes.
- Working knowledge of railroad operations, signal systems, track construction processesas well as track design concepts.
- Knowledge of civil engineering concepts and processes.
- Knowledge of procurement, accounting, budget, FRA and AREMA standards.
- Strong communication, analytical, presentation, project management skills with the ability to make sound decisions and exercise sound judgment particularly in crisis situations.
- Ability to ensure that corporate and department safety policies are adhered to with the ability to lead and direct others particularly technical personnel.
Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
- Supervisory experience.
