Yardmaster Trainee
Transportation Department
Position Summary:
Yardmaster training consists of two distinct phases.
Phase-1 is 80 hours of non-compensated training which will be scheduled for one weekday and one Saturday or Sunday each week for a period of five weeks. Satisfactory completion of Phase-I training is required to enter Phase-2, which is compensated.
Phase-2 is 230 days of training in specifically designated LIRR storage yards and/or terminals. Trainees must qualify on all applicable storage yards and/or terminals to be promoted to Extra Yardmaster.
Major Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all equipment, personnel and activity within his/her storage yard.
- Responsible for the safe and efficient movement, placement and delivery of equipment.
- Responsible for assembling train consists in accordance with predetermined service requirements.
- Supervises yard crews and is responsible for all activity within his/her storage yard.
- Responsible for maintaining appropriate records, train movement logs, time and attendance, sick and accident reports.
- Required to work various shifts, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Minimum Requirements:
- A demonstrated willingness to assume responsibility for personnel and equipment.
Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
- Experience in transportation operations.
- Prior supervisory experience and the ability to develop rapport with subordinates.
