Buy Before Boarding

You will save money by purchasing your tickets prior to boarding the train as the cost of buying tickets on board the train has gone up. As of the March 1 fare increase, tickets purchased on board cost from $4.75 to $5.50 more if ticket machines are available or the ticket office at your boarding station is open one half-hour prior to the scheduled departure. The higher on board fare does not apply to Senior Citizens, People with Disabilities or Medicare customers, except during the westbound AM Peak hours. For more details go to Ticket Information.

As before, you may purchase your tickets at ticket offices, from Ticket Machines, while on board the train and/or through our Mail&Ride system. There are now many more of the new and convenient Ticket Machines available throughout the system. With additional machines being installed every week, be sure to check your station for the location of the new machines, or go to the Stations page, for the exact location without having to visit the station.

We have two types of machines for our customers. The gray, full-service “Tickets” machines sell most LIRR tickets types, pre-valued MetroCards and UniTickets. The red, “Daily Tickets” machines sell only One Way and Round Trip tickets and a pre-valued MetroCard. All ticket machines accept bills, coins, ATM/Debit Cards and MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover credit cards. These machines return up to $17.75 in change.

MetroCards may be purchased separately from either machine or combined with LIRR monthly, weekly or round trip tickets from the gray, full-service machine. These pre-valued MetroCards can be used on New York City Transit subways and buses. They can also be purchased at LIRR ticket offices if you are buying an LIRR ticket at the same time.
