Paratransit services operate in all of the counties served by MTA commuter rail lines. Outside New York City and Nassau County, these services are operated by local governmental agencies or by private contractors. For more information about paratransit services, contact the appropriate agency.
The MTA has two paratransit services that provide shared ride transportation for people who are unable to use the subways, buses, or commuter railroads for some or all of their trips and their Personal Care Attendants (PCAs).
New York City Transit's Access-A-Ride serves New York's five boroughs. Access-A-Ride services are available for travel for any purpose 24 hours a day, seven days a week. See details of service.
Long Island Bus's Able-Ride serves Nassau County and coordinates paratransit service with Suffolk County to provide direct service to points approximately two miles east of the Nassau/Suffolk border. Able-Ride provides service county-wide on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. At other times, Able-Ride provides service only for trips that begin and end within three-quarters of a mile of fixed route service that is operating at the time the customer wishes to travel. Requests for service that begins or ends outside of the three-quarter mile limit will be taken, but reservations will not be confirmed until 5 p.m. on the day before the requested trip. See details of service.
For travel between Nassau and Queens Counties, call Able-Ride at
516-228-4000 and New York City Transit's Access-A-Ride at 877-337-2017
to reserve these trips. Customers may transfer to Access-A-Ride at Long
Island Jewish Hospital (main entrance-east side only) in New Hyde Park and
at Green Acres Mall (main entrance-south side at J.C. Penney) in Valley
Stream, or at 223rd Street and Hempstead Avenue in Queens Village.
