Grand Central Terminal
Boris Y. Klapwald
Meet Me at Grand Central, Photographs from the early 1950s
Boris Klapwald grew up in Peekskill, NY, attended Pratt University in Brooklyn and graduated with a degree in industrial design in 1953. After working with Tiffany & Co. designers and on the New York Worlds' Fair, he started an interior design business where he continues to practice today. His photographs taken at Grand Central Terminal in the 1950s have never been exhibited and offer a rare glimpse into America's grand waiting room during the Korean War years.
At age 76, this is Klapwald's first one-person exhibition, and one that was worth waiting for, as the viewer takes in the clothing and postures, soldiers on leave, restless children, anxious travelers and solitary adults, captured long ago in an atmosphere thick with light and shadow in the station we still use today.
The exhibition will be on view through Winter 2008 in the dining concourse of Grand Central Terminal and consists of 17 large scale photographs, each 42" X 51".
