MTA New York City Transit has a long history of involvement in cooperative education. This partnership dates back to 1965 for the high school programs and 1981 for the establishment of a formal program at the college level. Many of NYC Transit's current employees began their careers in one of the internship programs. NYC Transit offers the following internships:
- High School
- College Intern/Aide
- Cooperative Education
The program offers students the advantage of acquiring hands-on experience in a variety of career areas, including engineering, urban and transportation planning, finance, public administration, computer science, law, labor relations, graphics, marketing, transportation management, human resources communications, and other transportation fields. Internships are also available in secretarial science, accounting, and office administration. Students work closely with transit professionals to learn the operation of New York City Transit.
Program Objectives
The New York City Transit's Internship Program is designed:
- To provide students with interesting, challenging and practical work experience.
- To interest students in careers in the mass transit industry.
- To provide New York City Transit with an opportunity to make use of available talent.
- To establish closer relationships with the academic community.
- To build a pool of prospective employees.
Mentorship
Interns are assigned to project managers who are responsible for guiding their internship and monitoring their work.
Seminars
All students receive orientation before starting the program and are evaluated upon completion. If schedules permit, students have the opportunity to participate in courses, seminars and workshops that are offered at New York City Transit.
Internship Experience
An internship with NYC Transit can give students a career advantage. In addition to learning the discipline of the workplace, students are guided by experts who help them acquire the skills, knowledge and experience needed to perform today's technically demanding jobs.
Interns are assigned to NYC Transit departments/divisions to work in areas that augment their academic programs with on-the-job training.
Intern assignments are matched to each student's background and interests. Depending on their career choices and work assignment availability, interns may work in any of the participating departments.
Intern Sessions
Internships are available in the fall, summer and spring semesters.
